Global warming. Depletion. Extinction. Annihilation.
Polar caps – ozone balds.
Forests grounds – limbless stumps.
Farmlands – dust bowls.
Rivers – toxic flows.
Lakes – cess pools.
Carbage dumps – neighbourhoods.
Fresh air – dream on!
Written wills – authors we.
****************
I like best the last line “written wills – authors we.” It both evokes our own finite lives and our responsibility to (and for) the future. I write often about nature as I’ve experienced it, and sometimes I wonder if I will look back on those writings in a few decades from a very different world. I’m hoping it will not be as bleak as you (and sometime I) have described.
Thank you for your visit and comment MP – glad you spotted that last line – I wonder how many did.
Yes – that is two pronged and you caught it both – sharp eyes, sharper mind 🙂
All good wishes,
Eric
P/s Strange, I tried logging into your blog and WP says it is non-existent 🙁
How strange, and thanks for telling me. Try http://melissaperera.wordpress.com. That should work.
Best,
Melissa
This was hard to read because I see the truth in these words. We are now-rapidly destroying the earth we’d been charged to look over. Our generations of endless ‘taking’ are about to leave us with nothing.
Man forgets that he is a mere custodian – not the landlord. Because when he finally leaves, he leaves all
Good thoughts put down to words. Save Earth lest humanity shall perish.
Fixed the “lest” 🙂
I have similar fingers – with minds of their own.
Thank you for the affirmation,
Eric
Clever way of using the mystical symbol Ouroboros to portray man’s destruction of the earth’s environment: the serpent devouring its own tail, but with an ironical twist: the intended symbolic meaning of the cyclical nature of creation after destruction, does not apply in this haiku. There is rather the “literal” devouring of the tail (for sustenance) and of inescapable depletion of limited life-nurturing resources. A startling wake-up call. I enjoyed the mental calisthenics in this haiku, Eric. Dee 🙂
Hello Dee,
Another well thought out comment – you’re raising the bar, my lady 🙂
Yes, I took the literal route with the Ouroboros. Exercise is great for all of us, I reckon. Quite often, I find the treadmills you dish out exhilarating, to say the least.
Luv and hugz,
Eric
Hey great poem Eric! And I love the accompanying image too…both very powerful 🙂 I think I’m going to enjoy your blog immensely!
Hello Wolfie,
Welcome aboard. I am honoured.
Must say that your blog is so very captivating – love those images of wolves and also the posts. As you know, I started following your blog recently, thanks to Ned (gigoid)
All good wishes,
Eric
It’s awesome you’ve started following my blog Eric, you and Ned both sound like great people and it’s my pleasure to meet you both and follow your blogs 🙂 Now I just need my connection to stop playing up and behave in a fractionally more civilised manner and I might be able to make a little more progress with blog visiting than I can at the moment! lol 😉
Have an awesome weekend… Wolfie 🙂
Thank you Wolfie – and so many smileys 🙂
I’ll be reading more of your posts too – all recommended reading, if I might add.
Have a great weekend too,
Eric
Recommended eh?!! How cool lol!
I am now fighting to not put smiley’s in 🙂 As you can see it is very difficult to do! See? No smileys and you just get a comment full of exclamation marks and lol’s instead 😀 I wonder which is worse! ” :)…lol…!!!!!!! ?” 😀
When enough is enough the energy of god will intercede and remove a majority of the world’s population if necessary — just as she the past. Many spiritual people and even scientists believe that a contagion will wipe out the majority of the world’s population just as the Black Death did. There are going to be Earth’s changes for the majority of the land masses will be covered with water. I feel certain changes can be reversed by humans becoming more responsible regarding their attitude toward Mother Earth and fellow humans.
Hello Dr G,
Thank you for your visit and comment.
Yes, there have been many similar prophesies – it is what I refer to as “The fried chicken syndrome”
You are so very right – humans are in control to make responsible changes – but for now, the powers-that-be are actually not in control of their avarice.
All good wishes,
Eric
A strong word to indicate that human is likened to predators. Personally, I think that it is good to let people think what is the consequences of their actions.
I agree with you, Yoshiko dear – you are a mother and I know you want to leave the best you can for your family.
Cheers, Eric
Eric, thank you for your understanding. 🙂
Great poem today, my sentiments exactly!

I just dropped by your blog. Liked what I read and ticked to “follow”
See you around, Eric
A very succinct way to express our future if we do nothing to change our current path. Though there are different opinions and beliefs, it is every person’s responsibility to leave our world a better place than we have found it.
Your little tree hugger,
Susan
Very true, Susan – it is every person’s responsibilty.
I like that > “Your little tree hugger”
Cheers, Eric
P/s Give the terrorists, Orso and Charlie, a pat each from me 🙂
Didn’t know haikus could be so long… great writing anyway.
Hello @ D
Yes, you are so right. It started off as a preamble and by the time I done editing – ended up with a series of key phrases.
Have a great day,
Eric
P/s I’ve been enjoying your haiku for some time now – keep them coming 🙂
What an interesting perspective to take on the issue of global warming…
It’s almost scary, but couldn’t be more the truth.
Thank you Nessa,
Nice of you to visit and comment.
Many look to the skies but ignore the beast within, I reckon
All good wishes,
Eric
P/s I believe it is for you to decide how much, if and when to decide. You’ll never be wrong 🙂
very meaningful..can relate to it..it is important for people who care about nature
Thank you Padmini,
Yes, in our daily grind – most overlook this looming disaster.
All good wishes for the day,
Eric
Thanks..and wish you a good day, Mr Alagan
Reblogged this on oahuhiking.
Damn
Damn?
In just a few words you express quite a bit.
LOL – Okay and thank you 🙂
That little poem hits quite a punch. I reblogged it. I want people to think.
Well, that is very kind of you – both the compliment and the “reblog”.
I’ll swing over later to see what you are upto 🙂
Cheers, Eric
Very cool. Ouroboros has always been a favorite mythological curiosity of mine, love how you use the title as a wonderful prelude/early extension of the poem(s) to come. Nicely done.
This is a very gracious compliment coming from one who specialises in haiku – thank you 🙂
This thought just crossed my mind last night and today your post.
I reminisced the past when we used leaves to serve our carrot cake, glass bottle where we drink and return for re-topping, even school uniforms where our parents made with many folds at the bottom so that as you grew taller, you just extend the length. Simple things in life that helped conserved our environment.
I then had a funny thought if only a super being can move us to a segment of the earth, renovate the damaged area and replant life, move us back and work on the balance portion. We have a re-start button to do it right. Dream on.
Well, speak of a connection there 🙂
Lovely sharing – yes, we lived a different life back then, I suppose. Not exactly aware of our environmemt perhaps, but scarity was an impetus for conservation. Now, I fear we live in a use-and-throw culture.
You’re right, we can dream on – until the powers that be, awake from their wealth induced mirages.
Luv and hugz, Eric
Wonderful haiku, Eric, but very sad and true…I can’t watch any bad news about the polar bears; too heartbreaking and yet, there are so many other aspects of this issue to worry about…thanks for sharing, my friend.
Thank you Lauren, re the haiku.
I can understand your sentiments about polar bears. I saw an image of a polar bear stranded on a tiny ice floe in the middle of the ocean. It hit me hard – not only for that particular bear and her species –
But in the bear’s confused black eyes, I also saw Man’s fate
A fate fed by Man’s unbriddled avarice.
Peace, Eric
Well said, Eric! xx
Very profound. We are indeed cheating the next generation by the way we are destroying our planet.
The degradation of our planet is a relentless cancer.
I often wonder whether we’ve already reached a tipping point.
Due to the lack of awareness to nurture the nature.
Thanks for reminding dear friend.
Regards,
mei
Hello Mei – many concerned people out there but mostly lacking in resources and “voice”.
Thank you friend,
Eric
Sad and true, truly sad.
Yes it is Richard. I shudder to think what it will be – fifty years down the road, never mind a hundred.
I’m sorry but I don’t think we’ll last that long. I could and would like to be wrong.
I have grandchildren. I feel like I have helped to condemn them to a shortened and nightmarish existence.
My heart and spirit are crushed by what we have done and are doing to our children.
Richard, your words wreck me – perhaps because, deep down I feel that you may be right.
I hope for the sake of our children/grandchildren – we are both wrong.
I apologise and, of course, share your wish.
