I certainly hope most choose to nurture and build, but we all know that isn’t what always happens. We see destruction in our government officials and in many businesses, and sadly, even in parenting and teaching. I think it comes from individuals not understanding the full scope of their position and making choices with nothing positive to back them up.
You mentioned a key area of leadership – parenting.
Our education system equips us with knowledge and skills to help us make a living. But parenting and living skills are ignored. These, we learn on-the-job and through trial and error – usually at the expense of our loved ones. I reckon some of us succeed; others don’t do too well.

Nurture and build is something I’ve always believed in. I’ve protected workers who were under producing and tried to improve them over time protecting from a board that only looked to reasonable service in the interests of organization. But there are times when you have to agree with the board someone is not able to be rescued and watch with regret as their own foolish don’t care attitude requires they be let go.
I have been reading you for years now, and your posts and comments reveal a deep seated empathy—and that is a gift acquired and nurtured over the years, my dear friend.
We try our best to rescue people—sometimes from their own bad choices. When they succeed, the credit goes to them—as it must—for we are mere facilitators. But when they fail, we have to do right for the rest of the team. We do what needs doing, suffer in silence, and get up and continue. The top can be cold and lonely—as you well know.

Yes we are having an enjoyable time. Now that it is uncomfortable for us to travel they do spend days out with the kids and we are favoured with their company mornings and evenings. But today my daughter who is an artist and teaches art is painting some birds on canvas to leave with us. Last visit she left a beach scene with us. We are very happy to see our grandkids in person rather than talking on Facetime. 🙂

I had to relate this incident. The leaders love to do site visits and come up with various “excuses” including conducting customer service course that we are literary practicing daily. Bad enough it was a full day course but was conducted a day after a public holiday when we had to catch up with our work. We were then ask to come up with success stories with our customers. To our amazement the story was rewritten for management to read that the staff implemented what they learn in the course to achieve this success.
So it has been a grumpy week for me. Hope yours is better, Eric.
You have seen and know the weaklings who are quick to take credit for success and quicker yet to deflect failure. Sometimes, and especially when these weaklings occupy positions of power to inflict terrible damage to your career, it is best to save your silence and let them live with their delusion.
