  1. This reminds me of Becker’s Death-Denial theory, in which the human animal symbolically attempts to ignore or overcome the inevitability of its own death. All these things feared are symbolic substitutes for the larger fear, death itself, the fear of which is denied by compartmentalizing it into the smaller fears of the timing, the manner, and the oblivion to follow.
