When provoked, the answers may vary and expound further avenues. Usually we can recall better the question asked and relate the answers to it.
When taught, it can be quite restrictive like a sponge that just absorb. The student will regurgitate what he/she memorized.
The education system shapes the end product.
Critical consciousness is the crux of teaching and learning! Indeed Eric, when teaching pushes your gray cells to expand, you will find true learning 🙂
So true. A good teacher can spark thinking that creates a desire to learn more on our own.
A wise teacher minimizes lecture (unless necessary to the particular session) and engages students in dialogue while advocating independent thought, logic, clear expression, persuasive skills, and creativity.
A teacher should avoid shoving his/her personal political/philosophical view down students’ throats. Objective delivery of information is appropriate.
In connotation, “provoke” is well chosen.

Plato wrote a boatload of dialogues and great philosophical works, but I think Aristotle left a beautiful legacy of breaking down arts, sciences, philosophy, and humanity.
True words, my friend. I believe a good teacher enlightens with facts and guides his students. He does not coerce his student.

I haven’t written much of it yet, because it’s a complicated story line. I thought I’d ask the best writers I know, to take a look at it. Hope you had a wonderful visit with family.
Unfortunately the “instant coffee” world wants ready feed answers. Teachers who provoke may not be a favorite, at worst they will be regarded as deliberately withholding information. It is just difficult to please everyone.

Interesting post Eric. I read this to mean that no one should set out to force their opinion upon others in the guise of teaching them, and I fully agree. I have been in the role of student for more than half my life, and I could always feel the difference between those teachers who talked at me and the ones who talked to me.

A teacher merely introduces the student to learning devices and resource materials as you have rightly pointed out. Lectures are soon forgotten and even become obsolete, but the tools acquired will remain to broaden the intellect.
