I wholeheartedly agree that reading a story / description evokes the imagination more than a movie in which one gets someone else’s interpretation. And, yes I believe that our human inventive powers are what has advanced us as a species. This is why we need to focus on ways in which children’s imaginative skills are honed and developed. I believe that spoon fed videos, and video games thwart creativity. Children need free play and plenty of reading! I’ve wandered a little from your evocative post but sincerely thank you for the thoughtful (imaginative) prod!

Yes, it is sad that technology while enabling, when misused, also stifles. I am in total in agreement – total – that children need free play and plenty of reading to hone their cognitive and imaginative skills.
I also believe that written words are more enduring than videos and other mediums that require power to boot and access. Ancient tablets and cave scratches hold lessons. But like you, I’ve digressed.

Movies quite often leave very little or nothing for us to visualize. That is the nature of the medium.
The written word, on the other hand, leaves everything for us to visualize. A tall stern man – is descriptive but not definitive – leaving much for us to imagine.
In this regards, one can immerse in a novel and let our imagination take over, I reckon.
