Thank you for this buzz on behalf of the bees. Of the insect family they are the most compelling while ants are my nemesis. In both cases I am fascinated by their ‘social networks’ (not sure if this is the correct terminology). We are reading about fire ant ‘rafts’ floating on the Houston Harvey hurricane flood waters – fascinating but UG! Humanity may be the most rapacious; but did you know that some enterprising scientist recently calculated that, presently, by weight, there is as much ant as human on the earth. ‘Tis a pity that the bees aren’t in better shape.

Back in the 1980s I read a magazine article – no internet then – regarding two species that have been growing in numbers since forever. Humans and ants. That trend obviously continues.
But when we see the number of idiots in the human race – mostly found in politics – I wonder whether ants too have idiots among their midst. I’ll be happy trade a thousand politicians for one queen bee.

We always seem to wait till some species are on the brink of extinction that we think of wanting to preserve them. Otherwise the hunt continues. Has been the same since ancient times. The idea of using and taking only what you need is lost somewhere.
