  1. Diamonds are delicate when worn but it is the only substance hard enough to cut glass. A contrast. The generations whether loved or hate acknowledge the preciousness. Humans alike can have the virtue of diamonds – beautiful and strong. This is what I draw from your posting.

    1. This is a lovely take on the poem – one that sings of truth. Thank you, Maryam, for sharing.

      Peace,
      Eric
P/s Your posts “Twinkle Little Star” & “Where do we go from here” – the images don’t come through. You might want to check out the glitch.

      1. Thanks for letting me know. They were showing up before, so I’m not sure why they are not now. I’ll look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

  2. Blood diamonds, or not, the prices of them are outrageous. However, this piece made me think about Nathaniel Hawthorne and his theme of ‘Sins of the father passed along to his sons’ and I immediately thought about his novel, The House of the 7 Gables, and sins committed within there, as well as his short story The Minister’s Black Veil. That being said, those are two must-reads and will further explain my line of thinking.

Diamonds, upon inheritance alone, can produce a war within a family. I saw my mom’s siblings squabble over my grandmother’s. My mom just sat back and said “I have my memories of her and that’s all I need.” Truly one of the nicest things to come from her mouth LOL.

And who could forget what you said about Zirconia versus a raw diamond. Yet, here,, diamonds, mined within, the actual core of the being, the soul, could harbor so much fire, be it love or hate, two sides of the same coin. Maybe a fool would pay the high price of a diamond, but in love or war, diamonds shine brightest unfettered by sinful hands. My engagement ring, it was gorgeous, but his cheating ways marred its beauty and forever all I see is one ugly ring.

You keep the wheels spinning, Eric! Good job and Good Morning xo

    1. Wow! Eva dear,

I love this sharing, filled with real life recollections and beliefs. Your mother is so right, I reckon – memories matter more than all else. Yes, gifts that once sparkled with love, can morph into symbols of betrayal. So sad.

In my books you’re a true diamond. Okay, I’m your friend and because of that I’m prejudiced – so, shoot me!

      Take care and keep well,
      Eric

  3. Dear Eric,

Such beguiling gleaming facets reflect not the human toll of trafficking in blood diamonds. Both body and soul remain broken and battered, bereft of treasures unearthed for others. A few lines in regards to your fine poem:

    Obsidiamonds

    Black, overworked,
    Underneath, undermined;
    Sweat slave labor
    Of Love, fractured minds.

Take care, and I wish you well,
    Paul
PS Great to read other responders’ take on your fine passage.

    1. Dear Paul – yes, the damage wrought on life and soul is monumental.

That last line “Of Love, fractured minds” – is layered. For me, it captures well the phoney ‘love’ people pout while trampling on the bones and blood of unknown shattered lives.

The old saying “When the buying of blood diamonds stops —”

      Peace and blessings,
      Eric

  4. Ah, one of the reasons I’m not a fan of ‘expensive’ jewelry. When we are dealing with commodities of perceived value, there are people that will do whatever necessary to control (hoard) it. Sure, I have a few diamond pieces, but I much prefer colorful glass pieces 🙂

Hope all is well. Life must be lived – the blog world will still be here when things slow down!

    1. We too own a few diamonds – succumbed to the herd needs – but stopped wasting money on diamonds for several decades now, after we realised how the diamond cartel manipulates and controls prices.

Yes, life is great – nothing negative – all positives 🙂

      Luv and peace,
      Eric

  5. I’ve enjoyed reading your readers’ comments and your replies to them nearly as much as I have enjoyed your poem. I like your incisiveness.

    1. Hello Vera – welcome back 🙂

Yes, my readers’ comments add depth and scope to my posts and I try to encourage engaging comments with my replies. This makes the overall post an enjoyable read.

  6. Yes, as it passes hands with generations, it might evoke envy among unsuccessful relatives.. and the ad industry, of course, says, ‘Diamond is a girl’s best friend..’ All these emotions for a piece of stone:) lol.

    1. Very true – same stone – different people, different emotions. The same can be said for almost any material possession – best not to cast stones, I reckon 🙂

  7. Diamonds! Have seen none in reality, but yes, have seen only in the movies. Why do people waste money in such Jewell? Some people hoard them as much as they can, but is this doing any good to anyone?

    1. From a practical aspect – diamonds are small, easily hidden and carted. Many (wealthy) refugees from war torn countries rely on diamonds to start life anew. Diamonds and precious stones are more portable than gold – gold, whether jewellery or bars. Money, as in cash is too bulky and prominent (how many bags can one carry), and subject to exchange rate disasters. Money in the bank is usually trapped. Same situation with stocks and bonds. Real estate – immovable. Taken in this context, diamonds are a real last resort. The terrible headaches that the wealthy face – I can shed tears for them.

  8. It has been said, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” They (or other stone) does not bind and bound a couple’s relationship, but can be a beautiful thing to have around (on a girl’s finger). 🙂 I am sentimental to my wedding ring with its ‘certified perfect diamond’ the jeweler called it 48 years ago when I first got engaged to my husband. It did not cost near the price back then that it would cost today, so aside from that it is the sentimentality I have with it that would be irreplaceable.

    1. I share your sentiments, Joyce – the sentimental values attached to a gift from a loved one and the opportunity, when the time comes, to hand it on to our children.

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” – I believe this was coined by De Beers (I could be wrong). A very powerful message and among the most enduring sound bytes in the world of consumer marketing.

      Peace and blessings,
      Eric

      1. I think you are right.. It is a big diamond retail store chain if I remember too what I’ve heard.

  9. Very insightful piece. As with everything that is held as valuable and precious, there are always some who will take the extreme stance and only want it for themselves creating greed and hatred.

    1. Thank you, Susan.

Extreme stances are always – too extreme for any long term good, I reckon. Love and hatred normally share the opposite sides of a coin, you’re right.

Hope you are coping better. Enjoy Mitch looking after you and handling the chores. Don’t feel guilty. We need to be gracious in receiving help. Enjoy it as much as when it is we who do the giving.

      Peace, Eric

      1. I am okay. I took your advice and have started a suspense piece. I truly appreciate Mitch and am not so sure I could do this without him. The dogs and I would certainly starve.

  10. Material wealth is not what counts…what is held in our hearts and flows forth is priceless. All power to your elbow my lovely buddy Xx with hugs.

    1. Hello Jane buddy – you’ve not posted lately and I thought WP was playing up. Trust and hope all is as well as can be.

Truly you’ve spoken – material wealth has its uses, albeit very limited but many view it as the end-all and be-all.

Thank you for your well wishes – have not heard that full expression in a long time. Actually, that idiom brought back some memories for me – pleasant ones 🙂

      Luv and hugz, Eric

      1. You are the best and funny… busy here and dealing with stuff, much like you my lovely buddy. I am posting today funnily enough. Onward and upward hey? Always with love – big hugs dear Eric. Xxx

    1. Very true, David.

Just imagine, as one generation draws to a close and the matriarch hands over the family heirloom to – now, which daughter-in-law or granddaughter is more deserving — out come the knives —

    1. Yes, diamonds do provoke love and hate – but the snake eaters in the diamond industry would have us believe that it is all lovey-dovey stuff.

Everything is fine, my dear – just a little snowed under for the moment.

      Cheers, Eric

  11. like precious stones,so is a soul too mined, cleared from abrasions ,polished with rough edges of life to create a gem of a life, precious and worn forever…It gets worn though with time but in the depths of truth. I could think of this when I read your lines. Your lines always trigger my insightful thinking

    1. Excellent Soumya – exactly! You saw beyond the obvious, that which I buried within these words. I’m very heartened that you unearthed the parallel.

Peace and blessings my dear 🙂
      Eric

  12. like this one Eric — when I think of diamonds I always think of being foolish as the cartels have so many in storage to keep the price up.

      1. Normally diamond is talked about in the context of love. ‘Hate’ is an entirely new perspective and could be rightly so. V nice!

      2. Hello Raghu,

Thank you for the clarification – for a moment I thought my words were misunderstood and I had to redo the piece.

Yes, I did mean ‘hate’ and hints are scattered by the use of ‘generation’ – if you draw what I mean.
